Contemporary Kantha work

The space in between ...

For this small project I used my home experimented & naturally dyed fabric, and a very pretty tie dye silk scarf I found at the thrift store.

I also attempted to make a kantha worked flower out the left over material from my tea cosy project. It still needs a little bit more grooming;  I was not able to attach the petals properly.

The decorative beaded disc is from india which I sewed to a stuffed felt centre. I do have some green saree material from which I want to make a suitable leaf(or leaves) for it..

Now, I have a whole twig branch to fill in with all different crafts.

A baby blanket [learning left hand crochet]

I am taking a break from my other projects for this new baby blanket. It is for my friend's grand daughter. She is 4 months now, and I want to make something her.

I am making these lacey squares using baby acrylic yarn made in canada. But, I am still not sure how I want to blanket to be. The yarn balls do have a free pattern printed on other side of the label; one of them was for crocheting and other for knitting. I am not using them; I want try something different.

My blanket of many colours - part 2 [learning left hand crochet]

I have manged to make about 10 larger squares joining 4 smaller ones.  Most of the yarn are left-overs that I get from the local thrift stores, so they don't have labels; but I have manged to get quite a lot with similar texture and some lovely colours too.

I still don't know how big I want to make this blanket. But for sure, what I have made so far is not sufficient.

I am noticing my skills are improving.

I also picked up this craft book, on one my recent visits to thrift store. It is all about sunflowers; crochet, knit and some felting.

 

I tried a few of the patterns. I struggled with the written instructions at times, however there are charts for all the patterns, which I found useful.

I added a pin to one of the flowers and made a brooch to wear in my spring jacket. I love it :)

vintage inspired ...

tea cosy...
This flowered material was a blouse, (i could not take a picture before i cut it) that I found at a thrift store over a decade ago. Even though it was a  little too big for me, I still bought it because I loved colours and the flowers.

While sorting out the chest of drawers recently,I came upon the blouse, and since I am not wearing it, I of thought of using the material in craft projects. The first idea came to my mind was to make a tea cosy, so I went with that....

I hand stitched everything; and am quite happy with the final result.

Lets all have tea !!!

Making another....

Saree Quilt 
# 2

This is my second Saree Quilt.  This is the post. , I did sometime ago about my first such quilt.

My mother had collected her saree cut-offs over the last couple of years and handed me the bundle when I visited her last December. She is very pleased that I am making use of these odds and ends and ......

.... I am excited to have all these lovely cotton pieces with pretty prints and colours.

So here is the beginning..................

I have cut them in to roughly 15x15 inches squares. Where there was not enough material for one whole square I pieced several to make enough. I have not  pieced them exact corner to corner like the modern quilts. I would like it have a more of a rustic look.

I am waiting to find batting and suitable backing material, so I can start stitching.

But, you may have to wait for awhile to see the end result, as it will be all hand stitched. Last one I think, took almost an year to be completed.

... myself in a saree ... :) . . p.s. this was taken few years ago.

I did these crochet hearts couple of weeks ago for valentine, but was unable to post them as I had problems with my internet connection. Finally, I manged to fix it.

I was inspired to make these hearts after I saw knitted ones over at Wendy's blog; she writes this beautiful blog ;  http://septemberviolets.blogspot.ca/ .

Bits n' pieces mat [learning left hand crochet]

I did not want to throw away these crochet lesson pieces because I worked hard to get them right. I could have undone to use in other projects but instead I tried making something else.

I pieced them, adding extra stitches where it needed. All with what I had, I did not buy any new.
It did not become a perfect square or a rectangle, but that was alright. I added a single crocheted border in couple of different yarns.

A bit of an applique too; one of the flowers I learnt.

Lastly, I sewed a piece of plastic grip (which is available at $1 store) to the back to keep it from sliding. It being a little wonky, does not sit perfectly flat on the ground.

I am just happy with its bohemian charm. Now, I am thinking may be another one.

In Pink: half double crochet with chain 1 spaces                                      Yellow: Chain 3 lace

In Purple; lace with spaced shells

Finally, an update on my knitted winter scarf too.........  I have been knitting a lot during the past couple of weeks. I really want to finish the scarf before the winter ends.
